If a caller comes to your door, before answering it, ensure
that any other external doors are locked. Use a spy hole or window
to see who is calling before answering the door. If you do not
recognise the caller, keep the door locked and speak through the
closed door. If you do not feel comfortable with the caller, the
best advice is to ask them to call back later when you can have
a friend or relative with you.
Keep it Locked!
Police are issuing a reminder to householders in Norfolk regarding
home security following recent walk-in burglaries where doors
have been left either unlocked or open.
Chf Insp Carl Edwards said: "It's natural that, with the warmer weather we have been experiencing recently, people will be leaving doors and windows open.
"We would just like to remind householders that they should not leave doors and windows open or unlocked while they are out of sight of their property; for example, a front door should not be left unlocked while the occupant is outside in the garden."
Sgt Tim Horrobin, of Norwich Police Crime Reduction Dept, said: "We have seen incidents where offenders have clearly entered an unlocked home and they have taken the opportunity to steal a bag or a purse.
"We would encourage householders to get into a routine of checking that doors and windows are closed and locked when leaving the premises, and that window-limiters are used if windows are to be left open at night."
Anyone who would like specific crime prevention advice should contact officers at the Central Area Crime Reduction Unit in Norwich on (01953) 424242.
